Hypnosis and Surgery

Hypnosis has proven to be a powerful tool to prepare for surgery. It can diminish the amount of post-surgical pain, reduce post-surgical complications and facilitate healing. In addition, it can allow you to feel less anxious and feel more in control of your surgical procedure and outcome.

One thing we absolutely know is that stress hurts your body. A least case scenario example is when you are under a great deal of stress in school or at work. You are working toward a deadline at a dizzying pace. What happens when the deadline is behind you and you can now slow down? You get sick! You catch a cold, the flu, develop G.I. problems, etc. That happens because you deplete your immune system under high levels of stress. A worst case scenario example is death. Remember that the three top killers in The United States are all stress related: 1) heart attacks; 2) cancer, and; 3) strokes. Also, remember that the majority of heart attacks, the #1 killer, occurs on Monday morning at 9:00am. Only humans, with their attitudes, likes and dislikes and belief systems can accomplish that.

Yet, if you know that you can damage your body you must also realize that you can help and even heal your body. But, what is the variable? It is the continuum between feeling stress and feeling relaxed and/or peaceful.

It is an understatement to say that having to undergo a surgical procedure is a high stress event. It does not rank in the Top 10 Things To Do When I Have A Weekday Morning Free. The usual emotions may be concern, nervousness, anxiety, fear or outright abject terror. On occasion, there is the person who adopts the "let’s just get it over with" attitude with little emotion. It is the exception that someone will come into this situation feeling completely calm, positive and confident. Is there anyone you know that starts "heel clicking and finger popping" when they discover they need surgery?

However, you can now arm yourself with the knowledge that you can facilitate positive change in your body by the way you think. With the use of hypnosis that process can be enhanced to where your body can respond to a traditional surgical procedure in a non-traditional way.

Your body contains much more wisdom than you give it credit. It is in a continuous state of cleaning, repairing and healing itself. Think about all the times you have sustained a cut or abrasion. First, you bleed which allows foreign things to be pushed out of your body. Second, you clot. The body automatically knows how to send the necessary chemicals to stop the bleeding without your having to do anything. Third, the wound forms a scab. And finally, the scab drops off to reveal new replacement tissue. That is just one very small example.

A much bigger example of your body’s wisdom is that it believes everything you believe. I think that there are some people who might disagree with the notion of calling it wisdom if the body actually does respond in that way. Case in point, the majority of heart attacks occurs on Monday morning at 9:00am. Thus, for some people, that fact could be a disaster! However, it does mean that you can have some control over what happens to it.

You can and do trick your body all the time. You need only remember sucking on a sour lemon, someone running their nails down a chalkboard, the sound of a waterfall on a warm sunny day, your first kiss or falling in love to feel how your body changes with each thought. Yet, it was only a thought. Nothing was experienced in vivo, yet, the same thing happened as if it really did.

The astounding research done by Dabney Ewin, MD with burn patients exemplifies how the body can change or alter a catastrophic event. No matter how devastating a burn is, it begins as a 2nd degree burn. It becomes a 3rd degree burn when the body begins a process of trying to cool it down by flooding it with fluids. With the use of hypnosis upon admission to the hospital, the body can be tricked into believing that the burn site is perfectly cool and, thus, the body will not flood it with fluids. The burn remains more easily treatable that heals much more rapidly with much less scarring.

Applying a similar technique to a surgical procedure, your body can be allowed to believe that it can remain open, relaxed and receptive to what is occurring to it at that time and will know when and how to heal comfortably, effortlessly and quickly. In addition, you are also boosting your immune system. And, your body knows how to do that.
